It caused
quite a stir when the now cult-classic film came out in 1971, Harold and Maude, about a love affair
between a woman in her seventies and a teenage boy. The long-debated issue continues to this day
of why it’s “acceptable” for older men to connect with young women, but not
vice versa. That’s why the headlines are
so much grander when older women find love with younger men, such as when Cher
romanced a bagel baker 18 years her junior.
Ten years ago in England, Edna and Simon Martin, a couple with an age
gap of 40 years fell madly for each other and were recently back in the
newspapers letting everyone know that their 10 year anniversary is coming up
and their love is still strong.
Today, these women are known
as “Cougars”, I suppose, because they’re viewed as skilled hunters. Some Cougars don’t care for the nickname,
but most that I’ve had a chance to talk to really embrace it. Introducing, the Cougar ring from Urban
Outfitters. It has a thick silver band
with a dynamic cougar head, covered in white CZs and black stones, with green
CZs for eyes. It has a very bold-natured
sexy appeal. I’m too young to qualify as
a Cougar at present, but maybe one day….
